Summary
A sofa, one of a pair of sofas part of a set of eight pieces of giltwood seat furniture, English, circa 1785 - 1795, attributed to Thomas Chippendale, the Younger (1749 - 1822). Also comprising six open armchairs. All with bellflower and bead-carved moulded frame, outswept arms and patera-headed fluted tapering square-section legs terminating in spade feet and fitted with brass castors. Upholstered in eau-de-nil striped silk.
Provenance
Probably purchased by Sir Rowland Winn, 5th Baronet, and thence by descent until accepted by HM Treasury in lieu of death duties on the estate of Rowland Winn, 4th Baron Oswald (1916 - 1984), in 1986.
