Summary
A painted pier table, English, circa 1730, topped by a later boxwood-strung mahogany-veneered top, circa 1790. The base in the manner of Mathias Lock (1710 - 1765). The rectangular top veneered on pine and with crossbanded edge inlaid with chequer stringing and boxwood lines. The earlier base with a Vitruvian scroll-carved frieze. The aprons pierced and formed from pendant foliated scrolls and garlands of flowers and leaves. The legs cabriole, headed by scrolls, wrapped with acanthus and terminating in lion's paw and ball-carved feet. Painted and grained finish. -- The base probably originally gilt, and topped by a slab of marble. The date of the base of this table suggests that it might be a survivor from the Nostell Priory re-designed by James Paine (1717 - 1789) in the 1730s and 1740s, commissioned by Rowland Winn, 4th Baronet (c. 1706 - 1765).
