Summary
Oil painting on panel, An Unknown Gentleman, English School, 1538. A small half-length portrait of a man, turned to the right, wearing a dark coat and cap, holding the fur trim on his coat with his right hand.
Provenance
Richard, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (1797-1861); the sale of the Stowe collection, 12 September 1848, lot 34 (with An Unknown Lady), as portraits of Sir Thomas More and his wife; purchased with its pendant for 18 guineas by Thomas Rutley, for Charles Winn (1795-1874); put up for sale with its pendant at Fullalove’s, Manchester, 1 October 1857, lots 9 and 10, as a pair of ‘portraits by Holbein from the Stowe Collection, and in the Stowe Catalogue are called Sir T. and Lady More’; bought in for £4 10s for the pair; thence by descent; purchased by the National Trust by private treaty from Lord St Oswald in 2010.
