Summary
A chest on stand, one of a pair of cedar serpentine mule chests on low stands, English, mid-18th century. The pair is NT 959338. Each with a caddy top and a pair of cockbeaded drawers between fluted, canted angles. The stand with a shaped apron carved to the centre with a scallop shell and raised on four cabriole legs with a scallop shell carved to each knee and terminating in pad feet. Cedar, naturally repellent to moths, was commonly used to line chests in which linen and clothing was stored.

Purchased by the National Trust by private treaty sale from Lord St Oswald in 2010.
