Summary
A mahogany 'artist's' or painting table, English, circa 1765 -70, possibly by Chippendale & Rannie (fl. 1754 - 1766) or Thomas Chippendale (fl. 1766 - 1771). The top with moulded edge and hinged, opening to reveal a baize-lined flap. The front frieze faced as a false cockbeaded drawer. The left proper end frieze fitted with a cockbeaded and pintel-hinged quadrant-shaped compartment in front of a small cockbeaded rear drawer, a longer drawer below. The right proper end frieze fitted with another hinged compartment of quadrant shape, still retaining its nine original ivory paint palettes and a compartment for brushes; a short drawer to the rear, a longer drawer below. The friezes once with pierced fretwork spandrels. Raised on four chamfered supports joined by an 'X'-shaped stretcher and with mouldings forming feet concealing castors. -- Made similarly to the 'clerk's' desk at Nostell Priory [NT 959810], which may appear in bills related to Chippendale's commission for Sir Rowland and Sabine Winn.
Provenance
Purchased by the National Trust by private treaty sale from Lord St Oswald in 2010.
