Summary
Watercolour on paper laid down on board, Still Life by James Hewlett (d. Isleworth 1836). A still life with fruit and flowers, a peach, halved apricot, grapes and plums, with a pink convolvulus, yellow and purple stocks, a red carnation spray at the top. Hewlett specialised in flower painting, which he practised and taught in Bath in the early 19th Century. He exhibited work at the Royal Academy and other galleries in London. He is best known for his watercolours, which were highly esteemed by his contemporaries for their botanical accuracy.
Provenance
Bequeathed to Charles Winn’s eldest daughter, Emma, by her former governess, Miss Hill, who went on to marry the artist, James Hewlett; purchased by the National Trust by private treaty sale from Lord St Oswald in 2010
