Summary
Portrait miniature, enamel, Lady Maria Grey (1800-1821), attributed to John Simpson (1811 - after 1871). c.1820. Oval. Half-length portrait of a young woman, her head tilted to the right, wearing a white dress with a pink sash and stole. She has blue eyes, auburn hair high on the crown, a pink complexion and very red lips. Lady Maria Grey was the daughter of George Harry Grey, 6th Earl of Stamford (1765-1845) and Henrietta Charlotte Elizabeth Charteris (1773-1838), daughter of Francis Wemyss, Lord Elcho. She is buried at Bowdon Church. Richard Walker: The enamel is probably a copy from a full-sized oil portrait, c. 1820.
Provenance
Given to Roger Grey, 10th Earl of Stamford, in 1932 by Mrs Miny Rigby, daughter of the Hon. Mrs Trelawny and great niece to Lady Maria Grey. Bequeathed to the National Trust by Roger Grey, 10th Earl of Stamford (1896-1976).
