Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour painting on vellum, George Booth, 2nd Earl of Warrington (1675-1758), by Peter Cross (c.1645-1724). 1697. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a man, turned to the left and gazing to the left, wears a blue cloak, white cravat and long brown wig. He has brown eyes and a pale complexion. Dark background. Signed with monogram 'PC fecit 1697' and inscribed on the reverse in pencil 'The Erle of Warrington'. Previously attributed to Lawrence Cross as the 'P' could easily be mistaken for an 'L'. The digital image shows a photographic reproduction of the original, previously on display in the White Room.
Provenance
Likely to have been at Dunham since painted; it was found with P/152; P/153; P/154 and P/151 in a bricked-up room when some alterations were being made and the room was discovered; 'acquired' by John Poole, Lord Stamford's Steward (left 1834); inherited from Mr. Poole by his descendent, Mary Clarke, and offered for sale to Lord Stamford in 1909. Stamford collection; devised to the National Trust by Roger Grey, 10th Earl of Stamford (1896-1976).
