Summary
Silver caster by Samuel Wood, 1739/40. 'The baluster-shaped caster rests on a cast moulded foot. The hemispherical lower body is raised and soldered to the flared upper body, which is made from vertically seamed sheet. The joint is disguised by an applied moulding and there is a further moulding below the lip. The cylindrical domed cover is raised, has an applied circular panel and a cast baluster finial. The sides of the cover are pierced by chisel with alternating floral designs. Some of the piercings are blind. The front of the lower body is engraved with the initials HS surmounted by an earl's (or countess's) coronet' (Lomax and Rothwell, 'Country House Silver from Dunham Massey', 2006, pp.130).
