Summary
Chester Gold Cup, presented 1798, by Peter and Ann Bateman, 1791/92, 22 carat gold, fully marked on the underside with the lion passant, leopard's head crowned, date letter, maker's mark (Grimwade 2140), and sovereign's head. The trophy is in the form of a raised hemispherical tumbler cup with tall sides and a slightly flared lip, engraved with the shield, supporters motto and coronet of Earl Grosvenor and the inscription: 'The Gift of the Right Honble EARL GROSVENOR to the CITY of CHESTER 1798/WON/by the Earl of Stamford's/chestnut Horse GEORGE/by Dungannon'. Provenance
Presented to George Harry Grey, 5th Earl of Stamford (1737-1819) when his horse George won the Chester Gold Cup race, 2 May 1798, and thence by descent; lent to the National Trust for display at Dunham Massey by Richard Arthur de Yarburgh-Bateson, 6th Baron Deramore and 7th Bt. (1911-2006) and bequeathed to the National Trust on his death. Accepted by HM Government in lieu of inheritance tax and allocated to the National Trust for display at Dunham Massey, 2008.
