Summary
One of a pair of candlesticks with detachable nozzles, by John Quantock, 1754/1755, part of Lady Mary Booth's toilet service. 'The stepped and moulded octofoil scalloped feet are cast and rise to octagonal baluster stems. They are surmounted by vase-shaped cast sconces and detachable raised shaped drip pans... The pieces [including snuffer tray and scissors, DUN/S/340] are similarly engraved with interlaced strapwork, shells and masks, with armorials on each... This [with snuffer tray and scissors] is the only set of matching lighting equipment surviving at Dunham. Its octagonal shape suggests that it was probably supplied as a bespoke order from the specialist candle-stick maker John Quantock and engraved to be almost en-suite with the rest of the toilet service (Lomax & Rothwell, 'Country House Silver from Dunham Massey', 2006, p. 144).
Provenance
Stamford collection; devised to the National Trust by Roger Grey, 10th Earl of Stamford (1896-1976). Christie's 20 April 1921, ...lot 58..; bought by the Earl of Stamford via Willson [presumably an agent acting for the Earl].
Marks and inscriptions
The candlesticks are fully marked on the underside with the maker's mark (Grimwade 1607) lion passant, leopard's head crowned and date letter' (Lomax & Rothwell, 'Country House Silver from Dunham Massey', 2006, p. 144).
