Caption
The sitter was the daughter of the Rev. Francis Henry White (1782-1864), Vicar of Blakesley, Northamptonshire and Elizabeth Master. She was the great niece of the famous naturalist, the Rev. Gilbert White (1720-1793), of Selbourne. She married the Rev. William Grey (1819-1872), of Dunham Massey, where this portrait still hangs. Their son, William Grey (1850-1910), became 9th Earl of Stamford.

A head-and-shouldders portrait of a woman, turned to the left, left profile, looking down, seated on a patterned high-back chair, wearing a black dress with small white collar, fastened with a jewel under her chin. Short brown hair tied with a black ribbon. Pair to P/112.
