Summary
A walnut close stool, English, circa 1735 - 1755. The hinged lid with moulded upper edges and ebony cockbeaded lower edge, and inlaid to the centre with a coronet and the monogram of the 2nd Earl of Warrington. The front crossbanded, the sides with brass handles. On bracket feet. -- The ebony and the handle to the lid of this close stool, or commode, relate it to the very fine walnut and ebony chest also at Dunham Massey [NT 931148].
Provenance
Made for the 2nd Earl of Warrington (1675 - 1758) and thence by descent in the Stamford collection, until devised to The National Trust by Roger, 10th Earl of Stamford (1896 - 1976).
