Summary
Print, mezzotint, Elizabeth Woodville, Queen Dowager of Edward IV delivering up her son Prince Richard, Duke of York (1473-1483) to Cardinal Thomas Bourchier (1404-1486) Archbishop of Canterbury (after Johann Gerhard Huck) by Valentine Green, ARA (Salford 1739 – London 1813). published 1797. In plain black frame, 'On 16 June 1483 Gloucester [Richard III (1452-1485)], Lord Howard, [John Howard, Duke of Norfolk (c.1421-85)] his son Thomas and the Archbishop of Canterbury [Thomas Bourchier (1405?-86)] arrived at Westminster Sanctuary and persuaded, or forced, the Queen to deliver up her younger son, Richard Duke of York. Archbishop Bourchier was probably acting from stupidity or senility, or he may have shut his eyes out of cowardice and hoped for the best. Sir Thomas Howard conducted the child Richard down the river to the Tower. The Howard account books show that on that day they hired eight boats to go to Westminster and back, and eight boat-loads of soldiers are a powerful argument'.
