Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Lydia Elizabeth Hoare, Lady Acland (1786-1856) with her Two Sons, Thomas later 11th Bt (1809-1898) and Arthur (1811-1857) by Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA (1769-1830). Three portraits. (i) Lady Acland was the only daughter of Henry Hoare (1750-1820) and Lydia Henrietta Mallortie and in 1808 married Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 10th Bt (1787-1871). She was a member of the Hoare banking family. (ii) Sir Thomas Dyke Acland later 11th Bt was the son of Sir Thomas Dyke Acland 10th Bt (1787-1871) and Lydia Hoare (1786-1856) He married (i) in 1841 Mary Mordaunt (d.1851) and (ii) in 1892 Mary Erskine (d. 1892); politician and educational reformer, MP for Somerset West. Devonshire, Wellington respectively. (iii) Arthur Acland was the son of Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 10th Bt (1787-1871) and Lydia Hoare (1786-1856), he married in 1835, Frances Williams, daughter of Robert Williams of Bridehead, Dorset. Lady Acland is seated on a sofa, three-quarter length, turned and looking up to the left, she is wearing a brown dress and patterned black shawl draped over her shoulders, her right arm around Arthur who stands on the sofa on the left beside her wearing a lilac dress. With his left hand he touches Thomas's right shoulder. Thomas stands on the sofa behind Lady Acland on the right and is wearing a white shift. A Cashmere shawl draped over the back of the sofa to the right. Lady Acland holds a boy's red velvet cap in her left hand, and the spaniel, Bronte, looks up and in from the bottom right. In a gilt frame.
