Summary
Oil painting in canvas, Mary Drewe (1900 -1985) in the gardens at Wadhurst Hall, East Sussex by Charles Martin Hardie (East Linton 1858 - Edinburgh 1916), 1902. She is sitting on the top step of a flight of stone garden steps leading to a terrace beneath a tall stone ivy-covered pillar; she has short blonde curly hair, and wears a short white dress, short white socks and white shoes, her feet are crossed at the ankles and she is looking up at the sky; she holds a small dark brown teddy bear.
Provenance
Previously the property of Mary Drewe (1900-1985), elder daughter of Julius Drewe and Frances Richardson Drewe and removed from Castle Drogo in 1954 when Mary left to set up a nursery school in Exmouth. Bequeathed to the current owner by Mary Drewe, and gifted to the National Trust for Castle Drogo, 2024.
