Caption
This portrait was a 70th birthday present for the sitter, Basil Drewe, from his three children. It was painted by Carel Weight at Castle Drogo, where he stayed for a month while he worked on the composition. He was introduced to the family by Rosalind Drewe,(née Makertich), the wife of John Drewe (Basil’s son), whom he had taughat the Slade School of Art. Drewe is depicted before the hall fireplace between two dummy boards, which remain at the Castle (NT 902357.1 and 902357.2).

A three-quarter-length portrait, turned to left, gazing slightly up at spectator, wearing a three-piece grey suit, white shirt and green tie his hands resting one over the other on his lap; seated in a cross-framed armchair between a pair of Spanish dummy board figures.
