This painting of Frances shows her in her younger years at Wadhurst Hall and it is very clear that she must have been a very beautiful woman. No wonder Julius fell in love with her.

Oil painting on canvas, Frances Richardson, Mrs Julius Charles Hendicott Drewe (1871 - 1954) by Charles Martin Hardie (East Linton 1858 - Edinburgh 1916) signed bottom left: C.M.Hardie, RSA, 1902. She is shown in a white dress with a black sash and she holds a bunch of pink roses. In the background is an elaborate formal garden which is probably the rose garden at Wadhurst Hall, Sussex, the other family home.
Provenance
This item forms part of the original Drewe family collection at Castle Drogo. It was transferred to the National Trust in 1986.
