Summary
A fragment of oak timber from HMS Victory. Part of The Kymin collection temporarily stored at Tredegar House.
Provenance
Part of the timber used to refit the port side frames between the middle and upper gun decks in 1803. This fragment of oak would have been present on the ship at the time of the Battle of Trafalgar and came from a tree that would have been growing during the years c1645-1803. Donated by Philip Chatfield Sculptor/Gunner in 2008. This timber was an off-cut left over from works on board Victory in June 2008 at Portsmouth when ship’s timbers were used to fabricate the support to the Spanish Marble stone portrait of Lord Nelson.
