Summary
A red velvet overskirt embroidered with gold wire and trimmed with fur. Part of the ceremonial robes worn by Viscountess Clifden at the Coronation of George V and Queen Mary on the 22nd June 1911, consisting of; a red velvet overskirt (which leaves the front open so showing the underskirt of lace - a modern addition made for display purposes) a red velvet bodice, similarly embroidered and trimmed with fur, with front lace panel; a red velvet train trimmed with fur and attached to the shoulders of the bodice; and a small ermine cape with four gold wire tassels on the back (the two from the right shoulder are missing).
Provenance
Worn by the Viscountess Clifden at the Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary on the 22nd June 1911. A gift from the 8th Viscount Clifden and sent down to Lanhydrock from Highclere, Surrey, 1974 together with Duke of Cornwall's stick and a pair of wall sconces which used to be in the End Room at Lanhydrock
