Summary
Eight-day turret clock by Weule of Bockenem, Germany, retailed by J Treleaven of Bodmin, c.1908. Single-train, three-pillar, weight driven ‘plate and spacer’ construction movement, with dead-beat escapement, Harrison’s maintaining power, lantern pinions and wood rod pendulum. White enamel setting dial with arabic minute figures, on the back of the movement with a brass plate signed: “J Treleaven / Erected / 1908 / Bodmin”. The movement has a wooden cover to prevent ingress of dust and dirt. The circular, convex copper dial has roman numerals and gilt-copper spade and poker hands. Note: In 1981 the dial was black in colour and has subsequently been painted in Lanhydrock’s wine-red. In October 2013 the clock was provided with electric auto-winding by Peter Watkinson, of Chard, Somerset.
Provenance
A gift of the Hon. Gerald Agar-Robartes, later 7th Viscount Clifden, 1883-1966, who gave Lanhydrock to the National Trust in 1953 and continued to live there until his death in 1966. His sister, Everilda, remained at the house until her death in 1969.
