Summary
A bois satine, rosewood, tulipwood, sycamore and floral marquetry serpentine petit commode, French, circa 1760. By J.C. Ellaume, Maître 6 November 1754. With moulded mottled marble top and two drawers flanked by angles with gilt metal mounts trailing down the tapering legs to sabots, stamped J.C.ELLAUME.
Full description
Jean-Charles Ellaume (1714-1814) became Maître ébéniste on 6 November 1754 and over a thirty year career based in the faubourg Saint-Antione in Paris produced numerous commodes, typically with floral marquetry inlay.
Provenance
Acquired on transfer of the house to the National Trust. This commode was mentioned in the Drawing Room in a 1969 leaflet for visitors to Lanhydrock. Also seen in a photograph of the Drawing Room, taken by John Bethell for the National Trust in 1973.
