Print, engraving, Lady ‘Harriot’ Christian Henrietta Caroline Fox-Strangways, Mrs John Dyke Acland (1750-1815) crossing the River Hudson to the American lines, presenting her safe conduct by Robert Pollard (Newcastle-upon-Tyne 1755/6 – London 1839). Stormy cloudy sky over a river scene. On the left rocky bank a soldier aims his rifle to the right, behind him a row of tents with flag flying. In the centre stretching to the far horizon, a river with rocky outcrops, and in the centre on a rowing boat is Lady Harriet Acland (1750-1815) the daughter of Stephen Fox, 1st Earl of Ilchester and Elizabeth Horner and wife of Colonel John Dyke Acland (1746-1778), accompanied by a cleric (?) dressed in black holding up a white flag, an elderly lady in black with a black bonnet and a man holding the oars. Lady Harriet is dressed in a pink riding-habit composed of a coat and skirt with a black hat and is entreating the soldier on the left by showing him a letter of safe-conduct which she holds in her right hand.
