Summary
Chimneypiece Large fire opening with carved crowned egg and dart moulding surround. Two free standing tapering Doric columns on square bases of red Brescia marble and round capitols, supporting an entablature of two prominent corner blocks carved with triglyphs with a frieze consisting of a central tablet of white marble, the carving depicting the 'Choice of Hercules' (after Annibale Caracci) and six smaller inset tablets of red Brescia adorned with white relief devices/trophies. Break front inverted corniced shelf.
Provenance
Acquired during the remodeling of Saltram House in the mid eighteenth century.By descent to Edmund Robert Parker (1877-1951) 4th Earl of Morley.Accepted in part payment of death duties by HM Treasury and transferrred to NT in 1957.
