Summary
An Axminster carpet, probably designed by Robert Adam and made by Thomas Whitty c.1770. The pattern of this carpet reflects in some detail the design of the ceiling above, and it is woven in soft colourings of rose, blue, red, grey, green and brown.
Provenance
Acquired by John Parker (1735-1788), later 1st Lord Boringdon and thence by descent to Edmund Robert Parker (1877-1951), 4th Earl of Morley and accepted by H.M. Treasury in lieu of full payment of Estate Duty from his Executors and transferred to NT in 1957.
