Summary
Lead sculpture, Mercury, by John Cheere (1709 – London 1787). One of a set of four lead life-size statues in alcoves on the west front of the house. Mercury, nude, except for a helmet and holding a scroll in the right hand on a square stone plinth. Probably derived from a statue in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death-duties from the executors of Edmund Robert Parker, 4th Earl of Morley (1877-1951) and transferred to the National Trust in 1957
