Summary
Gouache on paper, John Parker, 1st Earl of Morley (1772-1840) as a boy by Daniel Gardner (Kendal 1750 – London 1805). Oval. Son of 1st Lord Boringdon. Standing full length to right by a tree, holding a pike and wearing red military jacket and white breeches, the uniform of the North Devon Militia. An entry appearing in Lord Boringdon's account book for June 1781 must refer to this portrait: W.Gardiner for boys picture. In a letter from Anne Robinson to her brother, dated 26 March 1779, she writes: 'The Boy is setting to Mr Gardner, in his regimentals with a espontoon, gorget and sash like a little officer upon guard'
Provenance
Acquired in 1779 by John Parker (1735-1788), later 1st Lird Boringdon and thence by descent to Edmund Robert Parker (1877-1951), 4th Earl of Morley and accepted by H.M. Treasury in lieu of full payment of Estate Duty from his Executors and transferred to NT in 1957.
