Summary
A mahogany tester bed, English, circa 1770 - 1780. The foot posts of turned mahogany, each with a fluted tapering shaft atop a foliate-carved baluster on a rectangular-section base with moulded foot. The arched footboard probably later. With a glazed chintz-covered headboard, footboard, tester and valance; the fabric in the style of the mid-18th century. The matching bed curtains lined with plain turquoise silk. With a box mattress, two hair mattresses and a long bolster.
Provenance
Date of acquisition not recorded; accepted in part payment of death duties by HM Treasury from the executors of Edmund Robert Parker, 4th Earl of Morley (1877 – 1951) and transferred to the National Trust in 1957.
