Full description
Silver mounted English flintlock coaching musketoon, c1762, by Henry Hadley of London (active 1734-1773). Hadley was reknown for his guns with Spanish style barrels. THe gun is said to have belonged to John Parker, 1st Lord Boringdon. Iron barrel of Spanish form, in 2 stages, octagonal at the breech then round to the muzzle, the stages separated by turned mouldings. The muzzle slightly flared and constructed with a false breech. The barrel inlaid with 2 gold lines and stamped with 6 Spanish-type barrel marks either side of 2 gold lined makers indentations containing the words HADLEY and LONDON. Large gold touch-hole. Silver spider-form foresight. The engraved barrel tang with a sighting channel. Retained to the stock by 2 barrel slides. Whalebone ramrod with a brass tip. Barrel length 46cm. Diameter at muzzle 18mm. Walnut full stock with hand-rail butt of curving form, carved rococo shell apron around the barrel tang. Engraved silver furniture comprising; buttplate with rococo engraving on the tang including a “stand of arms”, trigger guard with shell and flower finial, rococo form escutcheon with shell and flower, rococo form pierced side-plate with shell, flower and mask and 2 baluster turned ramrod pipes. All silver furniture has the mark JA and the date letter for 1762. (active c1745-1765). Scroll tip trigger. Flintlock, of flat form with a stepped tail, profusely engraved overall with scrolls, flowers and on the tail of the plate, a boar head. Signed within a banner under the facetted pan, H. HADLEY. The head of sliding safety bolt is missing. Retained to the stock by 2 sidenails. Overall length: 82.5cm

Made in London by Henry Hadley (fl.1750-1785) acquired by John Parker (1734-1788) created 1st Baron Boringdon 1784.By descent to Edmund Robert Parker (1877-1951) 4th Earl of Morley.Accepted in part payment of death duties by HM Treasury and transferrred to NT in 1957.
