Double barrelled flintlock carriage pistol by Tate, c1780
Full description
Good quality double barrelled flintlock carriage pistol, signed Tate, c1780. This is perhaps Bryan Tate of Louth (recorded 1810 - 1840). Round iron side-by-side barrels of Damascus twist construction, joined together by a top rib and formed with a false breech. Blade foresight. The engraved barrel tang with sighting channel. There is 1 ramrod pipe at muzzle. Retained to the stock by 1 barrel slide. The ramrod is missing. Barrel length 20.3cm. Calibre 14mm. Plain walnut half-stock, the rounded grip with flattened sides. Engraved iron furniture comprising; trigger guard with pinapple finial, and a rear ramrod pipe also with pinapple finial. Double curved triggers. Right and left-hand side flintlocks, the plates of flat form with border line engraving, stepped tails and signed in script TATE. There is an anti-friction roller to the frizzen spring. Retained to the stock by 1 sidenail. Overall length: 35.5cm
