Summary
Gun box - oblong brown leather-covered wooden box for shotgun. Outer covering is dark-brown leather with lighter stitching. There is tooling on the edge of the lid, the central handle loops and strap loops. There is a central metal lock on the front, with the corresponding latch on the lid, either side front and rear there are leather loops to take 2 leather straps (both missing). The inside is covered in red felt and has 6 compartments for the barrel, stock and tools etc. for two guns. The compartments have become loose. There are 3 ornate paper labels in the lid. The central one has engravings of the Royal coat of arms, 2 hunting scenes and pictures of various guns, it reads, 'WILLIAM ROCHESTER PAPE, Gun and Rifle Manufacturer, 29, COLLINGWOOD ST. and 35, WESTGATE ST., NEWCASTLE ON TYNE. Best Workmanship Guaranteed. WINNER OF THE GREAT GUN TRIALS HELD IN LONDON IN 1858 and 1859.' The left side label has instructions for CLEANING THE GUN and the right label has the CHARGES FOR BREACH LOADING GUN No. Condition is poor, leather scratched, internal coverings worn and partitions loose, labels are torn and the straps are missing.
