Summary
Silver toilet mirror with mark of Frederick Kandler (fl. 1720–1770s), London, 1777, oblong, with rounded top, gadrooned borders and chased with foliage and flowers, the top chased with drapery swags and applied with Cupid's quiver and bow, engraved with the Hervey arms below an earl's coronet, almost certainly for Augustus John Hervey, 3rd Earl of Bristol (1724-1779), marked on top, with scratch weight 157=9 on the back of the quiver and with wood easel back.
Provenance
Probably commissioned by Augustus John Hervey, 3rd Earl of Bristol (1724-1779), perhaps using silver from his brother's ambassadorial service, almost certainly a gift to his mistress, Mary Nesbitt (1742/3-1825); presumably sold with the contents of Mary Nesbitt's London residence, Norwood House, in the 1820s; sold at Sotheby's, London, 14 November 1963, lot 104 (with a hand mirror); Mrs Fay Plohn (1924-2009); sold at Sotheby's, London, 16 July 1970 (The Collection of Mrs Fay Plohn), lot 120; with S. J. Phillips, London; purchased by the National Trust at Christie’s, London, 4 June 2019 (The Collection of Drue Heinz), lot 258, with the help of a grant from the Art Fund and with contributions from a fund established by the late Hon. Simon Sainsbury and from the Miss G.E. Ashton bequest.
