Summary
Portrait miniatures, enamel, Lord John Hervey, 2nd Baron Hervey of Ickworth, PC, MP (1696-1743) and his wife Mary Lepel, Lady Hervey (1706-1768) set in a gold box, oval. Lid with agate cameo profile portrait of John, Lord Hervey, by Nattier. Bordered enamel in green and white. Sides enamelled bright blue, with cameo-like panels, and on base. French, C18. Inside lid, head and shoulders portrait of a woman, head inclined slightly to the right, wearing a blue dress with white collar and fronts, open at the neck, pearl necklace and ear-rings. Blue eyes, light brown hair dressed with pearls. Plain black ground. Oval enamel set inside lid. See also box ICK/MISC/167.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Probably one of her children and bequeathed to Frederick, 5th Earl of Bristol. Paper inside box inscribed 'This box I leave to my dear Nephew Fred. Earl of Bristol'.
