Summary
One of a pair of clappers. Made from a length of bamboo cane and painted green. Hollowed out with top end cut away. Metal bands at top, centre and bottom. Centre band stamped with the date '1939', bottom band stamped 'MYSORE KHEDDAS'. Brass double-headed eagle on one side of the bottom half and a brass elephant on the opposite side. A label is attached with a yellow and black ribbon, securing a printed label with a golden image of a double-headed eagle with an inscription, which reads 'This clapper which we beg you to accept, Is used to fright us, as from jungle glade We make our hurried way to grim stockade. If we have pleased you with our little play, We beg you show it - in the usual way - And turn the clapper from a thing of dread To one which showers praises on our head'.
Provenance
