Summary
One of six waiters, silver, four of which including this one are probably by Frederick Kandler, London, 1754/5, reworked from pieces of 1711/12 by Lewis Mettayer. The other two waiters are by Frederick Kandler, London, 1754/5. The circular waiter is raised with a shallow rim and a cast and applied shaped, gadrooned border. It has three shell and scroll feet which are riveted to the body. Heraldry: The centre of the waiter is engraved with the quartered shield, supporters and motto of the 2nd Earl of Bristol within an ermine mantling and beneath an earl’s coronet.

George Hervey, 2nd Earl of Bristol (1721-75); by descent to the 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863-1951); accepted by the Treasury in lieu of death duties in 1956 and transferred to the National Trust.

Underside: Old hallmarks (partly distorted in reworking): maker’s mark ‘ME’ beneath two sickles and a sheath of corn (Arthur Grimwade, London Goldsmiths 1697-1837, 1990, no. 2018) for Lewis Mettayer, Britannia, leopard’s head erased and date letter ‘Q’ for 1711. Underside: Scratchweight: ‘N2 [/] 9=12’
