Summary
Cover for tea canister, sterling silver, gilt, by Christian Hillan, London, 1738/9. The plain sleeve neck of the lid is seamed, and capped by a raised dome with foliate chasing perhaps intended to represent steam. The knop finial is cast and chased on top with a stylised flower. There are no hallmarks or armorials.

Probably John, Lord Hervey; by descent to the 4th Marquess of Bristol; accepted by the Treasury in lieu of death duties in 1956 and transferred to the National Trust.
