Summary
Oil painting n canvas, Alice Frances Theodora Wythes, Marchioness of Bristol (1875-1957) by Samuel Melton Fisher RA (London 1859 – Camberley 1939), signed and dated: S.M.F. 1901. A three-quarter-length portrait, standing against a dark background. She has short, upswept brown hair. She wears a low cut black gown with three-quarter-length sleeves, edged at neckline and elbows with matching frill. A bow is held at the centre of the bodice with a diamond and sapphire brooch. Three deep red roses are pinned on the left side of the bow. A gold wedding ring and a solitaire diamond ring are on her left hand; her right hand holds a fan. A black stole is draped over her right arm.
Provenance
By descent to Rear Admiral Frederick William Fane Hervey, 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863-1951), on whose death valued for probate; accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
