Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Right Reverend Lord Arthur Charles Hervey, (1808-1894), Bishop of Bath and Wells by Sir William Blake Richmond, RA (London 1842 – Keswick 1921), circa 1890. A three-quarter-length portrait as an elderly man, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, seated, against a dark background. He has wispy grey hair and long side whiskers and beard. He wears black and white clerical robes. He wears two rings on his left hand which rests on his knee. His right hand, partially hidden, rests on a chair arm. (ICK/P/238 b, is a black and white print, held in the Picture Store). The original, dated 1889, is in Wells Town Hall.
Provenance
Presumably painted for his nephew, the 3rd Marquess of Bristol (1834-1907); thence to his nephew, the 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863-1951); on the death of the 4th Marquess, valued for probate; accepted by HM Treasury in lieu of tax and transferred to the National Trust in 1956.
