Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Hon. Elizabeth Hervey, The Hon. Mrs John Hervey (c.1610/20-1700) (after Van Dyck) by Dorofield Hardy (active 1882 - 1920), signed, bottom right: Dorofield Hardy 1913. A three-quarter length portrait of a young woman, turned to the left, hazing at the spectator, standing against dark background of wooded landscape and greyish sky on left. She has mid-brown curly hair falling in ringlets over her shoulders, and wears a low-cut red gown over a white bodice with pearl fastenings and matching pearl clusters around the top sleeve seam. She is wearing pearl drop earrings and a single rope pearl necklace. She has pearl clusters in her hair. A flimsy greyish-brown stole is draped over her left arm and around her back. This is a copy of an original portrait, in the Duke of Buccleuch collection (possibly by Hanneman) at Boughton House, Kettering, Northamptonshire, circa 1638.
