Summary
Portrait miniature, Frederick Augustus Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol and Bishop of Derry (1730-1803), attributed to Alexander Day (Somerset 1773 – London 1841). c.1792. Circular. Painted at Naples. Three-quarter-length portrait, turned to the left, seated on a blue upholstered chair, holding an architectural drawing of Ballyscullion. Blue eyes, grey hair, pale complexion, modelled with heavy blue brush-strokes. He wears a fawn coat over clerical dress, a brooch with coronet below the collar. Column to right. Bay of Naples to left. The brooch has a miniature portrait of the Countess of Lichtenau, a mistress of Frederick William II, King of Prussia.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Probably commissioned by the Earl Bishop during his travels in Italy, 1790-1800. Bought in Italy by Lady Currie, inherited by her nephew, the Revd Sydenham Hervey, of 28 Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds, who gave it to Ickworth after 1905.
