Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Princess Augusta, Duchess of Brunswick (1737 - 1813), by Gervase Spencer (c.1715 - London 1763). c.1762, possibly earlier. Oval. Half-length portrait of a young woman, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a pale yellow dress trimmed with lace. Grey eyes, powdered hair tightly dressed with blue ribbons, pale complexion. Pale blue background. Engraved on back of gold locket 'Princess Augusta by Gervase Spencer'. An old paper label on the back is inscribed in ink 'Pss Augusta Drawn by Gervase Spencer circa 1762'.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
