Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on vellum, King Victor Amadeus III, King of Sardinia (1726-1796) (after Domenico Duprà), Italian School, c.1752. Oval. Half-length portrait of a man, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a cuirass over a blue and pink leather jerkin. Dark blue eyes, powdered wig with queue. Brown scumbled background. Engraved on back of gold locket 'Victor Amadeus, King of Sardinia, 1773-1796'. This is a variant of an oil portrait c.1752 in armour by Domenico Dupra. An oil version is at Ickworth ICK/P/231 acquired by the 2nd Earl of Bristol during his tenure of office as George II's envoy in Turin 1755-58.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Probably acquired by the 2nd Earl of Bristol.
