Summary
Portrait miniature, enamel, Queen Caroline (of Brandenburg Ansbach) (1683–1737) (after Sir Godfrey Kneller), by Christian Friedrich Zincke (Dresden 1685 - Lambeth 1767). Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a woman, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing coronation robes, crimson trimmed with ermine and slashed at the shoulders. Grey eyes, long powdered hair falling over her right shoulder, pink complexion. Chestnut coloured background. Engraved on back of gold case 'Caroline of Anspach, Wife of George II'. Based on a Kneller portrait of 1716.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Probably acquired by Lady Bristol, one of the Queen's Ladies of the Bedchamber, or by her favourite, Lord Hervey.
