Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, King Charles Emmanuel III of Savoy, King of Sardinia (1701-1772), Italian School. c.1750. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a man, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a pink and blue robe over black and gold armour. Brown eyes, powdered hair, pale blueish complexion. Dark grey background. The back of the gold locket has the monogram 'EC' surmounted by a gold crown, and is engraved 'King of Sardinia, 1730-1773'. A miniature version of a state portrait by Clementina in the Palazzo Reale in Turin. The miniature was probably acquired by the 2nd Earl of Bristol during his term of office as envoy at Turin 1755-1758.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
