Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on vellum/ivory?, Princess Sophia, Electress of Hanover (1630–1714) or Queen Sophia Dorothea, Queen of Prussia (1685/7-1757), German School. c.1710-1715. Head and shoulders portrait of a woman, turned slightly to the right, head turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a gold dress and scarlet ermine-lined robe. Grey eyes, white powdered hair falling over her left shoulder, pale complexion, aged about sixty. Dark background. Engraved on back of gold case 'The Electress Sophia of Hanover'. Possibly by Charles Boit, a French miniaturist working in London at the court of Queen Anne.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
