Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Lord John Augustus Hervey (1757-1796) by Richard Cosway RA (Tiverton, Devon 1742 - London 1821). 1796. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a young man, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a blue coat and white cravat. Brown eyes, turned up nose, powdered hair (or wig) in queue, fresh complexion with firm blue modelling. Cloudy sky background. Engraved on back of gold locket 'John, Lord Hervey, Captain in the Royal Navy, H.M. Min, Plen at the court of Tuscany, 1796. R. Cosway RA'.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Possibly the miniature listed by the Rev Sydenham Hervey in the Bishop's Palace, Wells, in 1894. If so then this is not the other possibility which is that this was lot 157 in the posthumous sale of the sitter's grandson, the 6th Lord Howard de Walden, Christies 16-18 March 1869. Richard Walker 1991.
