Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Lord John Augustus Hervey (1757-1796) by John Smart I (Norwich 1741 – London 1811). 1782. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a young man, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing naval uniform (dark blue coat edged with gold) and white cravat. Brown eyes, powdered hair in queue, high complexion. Grey background. Signed and dated lower right 'J.S. 1782'. Engraved on back of gold case 'John Augustus, Lord Hervey, J. Smart 1782'.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Possibly the miniature listed by the Rev Sydenham Hervey in the Bishop's Palace, Wells in 1894.
