Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Frederick Augustus Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol and Bishop of Derry (1730-1803), by Gervase Spencer (c.1715 – London 1763). c.1750-1752. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a man, head inclined to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a lavender coat, white waistcoat and cravat. Pale grey eyes, powdered hair in queue, pale (faded) complexion. Pale blue background. Signed and dated l.r. 'GS 17..' Engraved around rim 'Frederick Earl of Bristol', and on back 'G. Spencer'. One of 3 miniatures formerly set in a marble paper-weight (ICK/P/192 and 203). The sitter's clothes and apparent age suggest a date c.1750, possibly a marriage portrait c.1752.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
