Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Augustus John Hervey, 3rd Earl of Bristol (1724-1779) by Nathaniel Hone the elder, RA (Dublin 1718 – London 1784). 1759. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a man, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator wearing naval uniform (bright blue coat edged with gold and with white facings). Brown eyes, powdered hair, very pale complexion with bluish modelling. Plain grey background Indistinctly signed lower right. Engraved on concave back of gold case 'Horace Hone pinxt 1759'. In 1908 this miniature was attached to ICK/P/190.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
