Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, The Hon. Thomas Hervey (1699-1775), by, John Smart I (Norwich 1741 – London 1811). 1764. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a man, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing the livery of Vice-Chamberlain to Queen Caroline [sounds identical to uniform of Thomas Hanmer Hervey in P.185] (scarlet coat with blue facings edged with gold). Brown eyes, grey powdered hair, pale (faded pink) complexion. Plain drab background. Signed and dated l.l. 'J.S. 64'. , Inscribed on reverse of case 'Hon Thomas Hervey, J. Smart'. 2nd son of 1st Earl of Bristol by his 2nd wife.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Lane sale, Christie's 1912, bought Pawsey and Payne £73.10.0 for the Marchioness of Bristol.
